Karauli
Karauli Heritage Hotels
The kingdom of Karauli, founded in 1348, close to the borders of both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, has ravines in the countryside, and is now off the beaten track. Better known for its
pink stone used for construction, Karauli is a pilgri-mage centre, and has an old palace which, though mostly in ruins, is still representative of the opulence of its medieval durbars. Bhanwar Vilas Palace: planned like a European building by the maharaja himself, who eliminated the need for an architect, the palace has been converted by the current head of the family, who also keeps vintage cars in his garages, into a 25 room hotel. The restaurant serves Indian and Rajasthani cuisine, and there are facilities for swimming and billiards.
