Kota

An offshoot of the kingdom of Bundi, Kota soon overtook its parent principality in both opulence and valiance, and the Hadas came to be recognised as particularly fierce warriors. The huge fort at Kota with its durbar hall, and its painted apartments is every bit as interesting as the palace that floats on an island in the Chambal river that flows through this, now, industrialised town.

Brijraj Bhawan: The home of the present head of the royal family of Kota, Brijraj Bhawan was built in the early 1930s in}he colonial style to house the British resident, and later converted into a royal guest house. It now uses 7 rooms as an exclusive hotel for those who value taste. The rooms have original, antique furnishings, the gardens are immaculate, and there is a view over the Chambal river meandering far below.

Sukhdam: Built in a residential part of the city, and over a hundred years old, this Indo-Saracenic mansion is attractively maintained and has well-tended lawns. The 8 rooms and 4 suites are well furnished.

Umed Bhawan Palace: Around the turn of the century, almost all princely states seemed to have accepted that with changing times, it was probably appropriate that . they commission modern palaces away from their fortified residences where, for centuries, the rulers had lived. Abandoning the fort, therefore, the royal family of Kota shifted into this magnificent palace set within a vast estate, and where the Rajmata has continued to live. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, the design of the palace is European, though the decorative aspects are Rajput. Original fixtures and furnishings add to the ambience of its 17 rooms, bar and restaurant.
