Mount Abu
Mount Abu Heritage Hotels
A hill resort in a desert may sound surprising, but the scrubby Aravallis that run through the state rise sharply here, ensuring a more equitable climate. And set within a bowl, in the same vicinity, is a large lake, Nakki, which completes the conventional imagery of a summer retreat in the hills, which is exactly what the British, as well as the princely states of the Rajputana, have used it for. But Mount Abu, for much longer, has been an important centre of pilgrimage for the Jains who have adorned the landscape with their temples.Closely linked with history and pilgrimage, Mount Abu, nevertheless, is a charming place for an ideal stay away from the madding crowds.
Cama Rajputana Club Resort: Built as a club a hundred years ago, and where its royal and noble guests once gathered to relax and socialise, this structure is reminiscent of life as it used to be in more gracious times. Now a deluxe hotel, it has 40 rooms, 2 suites, 10 cottages, and all the expected facilities: multi-cuisine restaurant, bar, card room, library, swimming pool and health club. The club comes with its own tennis and squash courts, and a golf course.
Connaught House: Rajasthan's only hill resort is Mount Abu, built around the vast Nakki Lake. Here, members of the royal families and their prominent courtiers built summer cottages. Connaught House was built by the chief minister in the durbar of Jodhpur, and is planned in the English style, a sylvan retreat set in a garden - the perfect place to unwind.
Kesar Bhawan Palace: Built by the Sirohi family, and one of the oldest palaces in this summer resort, it exemplifies the architecture of the region, with corridors all around, and private pavilions with each of its 10 rooms. The Sirohi family were the original inhabitants of Mount Abu before it was thrown up as a summer resort for all families under British dominion.
Palace Hotel: Also known as Bikaner House, and designed as a summer retreat for Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner by Sir Swinton Jacob before he built the ma~ificent Lallgarh in Bikaner, this large building was one of the earliest to be converted into a hotel (in 1962). Once the venue for stately balls and formal dinners, it now has two dining halls with Indian and Continental cuisine on the menu, in addition to the 38 rooms with their period appointments.
Sunrise Hotel: Eight decades old, and built as a summer resort for the maharaja of Bharatpur, the architecture is quintessentially British with spacious rooms overlooking the lake. Open terraces are ideal for sitting in, or catching up with a favourite book. The
palace has 16 rooms and a multicuisine restaurant.
