Nagaur

Travel Angel Says: Nagaur with its massive ramparts and impressive gateways is one of the fascinating towns of Rajputs. The town was granted to Raja Amar Singh Rathore by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The historic Nagaur Fort houses splendid palaces, temples and palatial mansions. Some of the beautiful palaces within the fort including Moti Mahal, Badal Mahal and Hawa Mahal are all splendid architectural creations. The courtyard or Baradari has painted walls, adorned with some exquisite frescoes and lovely murals which are a blend of the Persian and the typical Nagaur styles.

The distinctive highlights of Nagaur temples are their decorated walls and entrances, ornate with beautiful paintings depicting various episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The paintings in the Jain temples. depict motifs related to the life of Lord Mahavira and Parsavnath. The 'Tarkin ka Dargah' is a noteworthy 15th century mosque worth visiting.

Nagaur is the venue of an annual cattle fair held in Jan/Feb. During the four day festival. the town is thronged by cows, bullocks. oxen and camels accompanied by turbaned sellers and eager buyers.

Cock and bull fights, camels races, folk dances and music enhance the excitement of the fair.

TRAVEL INFORMATION HOW TO GET THERE

Air: Nagaur can be reached from Jaipur (293 km), Jodhpur (135 km) and Udaipur (400 km) which are on the Indian Airlines route that links Delhi to Mumbai.

Rail: Most of Rajasthan is accessible by a network of rail services. An excellent connection to Jaipur. the capital of Rajasthan, from Delhi is the Pink City Express (5 hour run) which is a vestibuled, chair-car rail service. Some important train connections are: Ranakpur Express (Bikaner-NagaurRatangarh); 4893 Mail (Marwar-NagaurMerta Road Jn.)

Road: Rajasthan State Roadways' coaches link most tourist places and business centres in and around the state. Chauffeur-driven air-conditioned cars can be hired through the State Tourist offices and other approved operators.

Some important road distances from Nagaur are Agra 550 kms, Delhi 554 kms, Jodhpur 135 kms, Ajmer 162 kms, Nathdwara 362 kms, Jaisalmer 312 kms (via Phalodi, Pokaran) and Bharatpur 494 kms.
