Nawalgarh Heritage Hotels
The seat of the Poddar families, among others, Nawalgarh is known for the high quality of its paintings, even in the richly frescoed Shekhawati area. Its Poddar School has some excellent old work, as well as walls that have been restored in recent times using the same style of frescos for which the region is famous. Nawalgarh was founded in 1737 by Thakur Nawal Singh, a warrior-statesman of some eminence.Roop Niwas Palace: Built by Thakur Roop Singh at the turn-ofthe-century as a European style palace for his family, complete with swimming pool, billiards room, a large garden, and large rooms, the palace has shady trees around it, and a garden that the head of the family takes great pride in, given the semi-arid conditions of the desert. The palace has 30 rooms, corridors lined with family photographs, and a restaurant where the Indian and Rajasthani cuisine is excellent.
