Dampa
Tiger Reserve
India travel plus.com Explorer : a brief introduction to the Park
Travel Angel Says:
Mizoram is one of the most picturesque states of
India's northeastern Himalayan region.
northeast of it lie the beautiful Blue Mountains, with the highest peak at 2500 metres (8203 feet) About 65 per cent of the total state area is covered with forest. Up until 1950, the forested area fell under the control of one village chief and the land was used for shifting cultivation, known locally as jhum cultivation.

In 1974, 600 square kilometres (230 square miles) of the moist deciduous forest was declared a sanctuary, and villages were shifted outside the forest area.
The Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary was upgraded in 1994 to a tiger reserve of 500 square kilometres (190 square miles) With undulating, medium to high hills running in a north-south direction, the reserve receives a very high precipitation.
Elephant back safari through these areas exploring its untamed landscape is an experience in itself. India travel plus.com welcome you to explore this untamed landscape.

Bamboo and evergreen forests - Dampa National Park
Dampa, like many of the other northeastern parks of India, has a rich biodiversity and a productive ecosystem. In its lower reaches are moist deciduous and thick evergreen bamboo forests, while in the upper reaches semi-evergreen forest with natural grasslands are prevalent. Trees consist of a mixture of different species like Simal (Silk Cotton), Mesua ferrea, White Cedar, Tun (Cedrela toona), Agarwood, Indian Rubber tree and several species of bamboo and cane grasses as well as orchids. Some parts of the forest are very dense and inaccessible. Embarking on the forest's trekking trails (both one-day and several-day treks) to view this unique and diverse ecosystem is a wonderful experience
Wildlife - Dampa National Park
Besides its small Tiger population (the latest 1 996 census reflects only five), Dampa sup ports Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Jungle Cat and Wild Dog. These predators depend mostly on the park's two deer species, Sambhar and Muntjac (Barking Deer), as well as Serow (a goat antelope), Indian Wild Boar, porcupines, and Malayan Squirrel for their diet. The forests harbour many primates, among them Hoolock (White browed) Gibbon, Common and Capped Langur (Leaf Monkey), Stump-tailed and Rhesus Macaque, and Slow Loris.
