Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve

Location of Periyar National Park : Set amid the high ranges of the. Western Ghats in the state of Kerala. The national park is accessible by air from Cochin (200km; 125 miles). Madurai is 140Km (87 miles) from the park. The nearest railhead is at Kottayam (114km; 70 miles), while the nearest town is Kumily,3km (2 miles) away.

Climate of Periyar National Park : Both summer (maximum 29°C; 84°F) and winter (maximum 21°C; 70°F) are moderate.

When to go (Periyar National Park) : A favourable time to visit is between October and April

Getting to Periyar National Park : By road, head for Thekkady from Madurai, Tamil Nadu's temple town, then the district town of Theni. An hour's drive takes motoriststothe Thekkady forest rest house in the hills. Beyond this is Periyar. Buses from Thekkady to the park; jeep hire available.

Facilities at Periyar National Park : Accommodation in Thekkady forest house at the outer fringes of the sanctuary; Aranya Nivas Hotel in the park at the lake; Edapalayam Lake Palace and Periyar House, both near the lake. Lake Palace was once the summer residence of the Travancore royal clan. Resorts incl ude The Spice Village and Taj Garden Retreat; Shalimar Spice Garden also worthwhile. The Forest Department operates seven boats for cruising on Periyar lake.

Wildlife in Periyar National Park : Great herds of IndianElephant, Gaur, Wild Boar, Sambhar and other deer species. Also elusiveLion-tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Langur.
