Home Exploring Indian Wildlife Tiger Conservation In India

Protected Area

Protected Area

In terms of the area declared as National Parks, Sanctuaries and other 'Reserves', India's achievement in Protected Area Development is significant. Pas in India cover about 14.8 million ha. representing about 14 per cent of the forest area, consisting of 80 national parks, 441 wildlife sanctuaries and 8 Biosphere reserves.

However, the condition of several of the Pas is poor, because of fire, grazing, and inadequate management. Most of the Pas are not covered by comprehensive management plans. Some are below the minimum size required to be effective. People-Wildlife Interface in several cases is fraught with conflicts and tension.

The existing Pas should be assessed for their effectiveness, and they should be covered by an appropriate management plan. Measures are to be properly planed and implemented for biodiversity conservation, Buffer-Zone management, wildlife conservation and watershed protection. Potential for development of eco-tourism, participator eco-development, other non-destructive uses of resources, and wildlife farming should be investigated and suitable programmes developed.
