Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park

In Nepali language, Sagarmatha - referring to the Everest peak - means 'head of the sky' Similarly, the Tibetan name for Everest, Chomolungma, means 'goddess mother of the eart. Sagarmatha park is situated in the northeast of Kathmandu, in the district of Solu Khumbu.

This spectacular Himalayan mountain chains cover an area of 1148 square kilo metres (445 square miles. It was declared a national park in 1976 and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. Sagarmatha National Park encompasses the catchment basin of the Dudh Kosi, Bhote Kosi and Imjakhola rivers which drain the slopes of the Sagarmatha and other peaks of the area. Apart from Mount Everest (8848 metres; 29,030 feet), the highest peak in the world, other great peaks of the area carry names such as Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Nuptse. The park's lowest elevation occurs at Jorsalle at 2848 metres (9345 feet).

Exploration of the Sagarmatha national park is generally undertaken on foot, but visitors can gain quick access if preferred by helicopter from Lukla airport to the Shyangboche airstrip within the park.From here, on foot, the park headquarters at Namche Bazar are a two-day trek away.

Within Sagarmatha the ideal sites to visit are the Gokyo valley, Lobuche-Kala Pattar base camp, and the Chukung and Thame valleys. Travellers need to be well equipped for camping, and should carry food supplies and sufficient fuel. It is advisable to arrange guides and porters

Location of Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park : In northeast Kathmandu, Solu Khumbu district. The nearesl town ,and airport is Lukla(a 50- minute flight away), situated at a height of 2850m (9350ft);regular air service from Kathmandu.

Climate of Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park: In summer, above 3000 m (9800ft) : 6 to -10°C (43 to 14F): below 300m: 10 to -5°C (50 to 23°F). In winter, above 3000m: 0 to -25°C (32 to -13°F); below 3000m: 5 to -21 °C (41 ° to -6°F).

When to go (Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park) : The best time to visit is from September to May because the skies are clear.
